Trasplante masivo de corales más grande de la región que se realiza de manera casi simultánea en tres países

Bayahibe, República Dominicana.- Con el objetivo de contribuir a la conservación y restauración de la biodiversidad y a la protección costera, la Cooperación alemana para el desarrollo, GIZ, y decenas de instituciones científicas, gubernamentales, ambientales y privadas del sector turístico que tributan a la protección de la vida submarina, desarrollan Coralmanía 2021, el trasplante masivo de corales más grande de la región.

Este evento surgió en República Dominicana en 2016, de la mano de la Fundación Dominicana de Estudios Marinos (FUNDEMAR), Fundación Grupo Puntacana, Counterpart International, CEBSE y The Nature Conservancy (TNC), con apoyo de la GIZ. Y este año tiene un impacto regional, realizándose en 3 países: Costa Rica, Honduras y República Dominicana de forma casi simultánea, como parte de las actividades contempladas en el proyecto “Transferencia de Herramientas Innovadoras para la Conservación y Restauración de Arrecifes de Coral en Honduras”.

La iniciativa de cooperación triangular, aprobada el año 2019,  a través del Fondo Regional para la Cooperación Triangular en América Latina y el Caribe por encargo del Ministerio de Cooperación Económica y Desarrollo de la República Federal de Alemania, tiene el  objetivo de promover la conservación y restauración de arrecifes coralinos en las tres naciones, mediante la transferencia, el intercambio y la consolidación de experiencias y herramientas. En República Dominicana, cuenta con el apoyo de la GIZ, la participación del Viceministerio de Cooperación Internacional del Ministerio de Economía, Planificación y Desarrollo como ente rector de la cooperación en el país, el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales como entidad contraparte, así como FUNDEMAR, con apoyo del proyecto de Adaptación Basada en Ecosistemas, financiado por el Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, la Fundación Grupo Puntacana, la Fundación Cap Cana y The Nature Conservancy.

Rita Sellares, directora ejecutiva de FUNDEMAR expuso que: “La clave de un programa de restauración exitoso y replicable es adecuar las tecnologías existentes y personalizarlo a la realidad de cada país, las condiciones del sitio donde se implementará y la capacidad técnica y económica de la institución. Así como las alianzas clave entre sector privado, ONG y agencias gubernamentales, el compromiso de la comunidad local, la creación de oportunidades de trabajo y capacitación para convertirse en técnicos en restauración de corales creando un programa autosostenible“.

La meta regional es trasplantar al menos un kilómetro cuadrado de arrecife de coral, es decir, más de 1.800 fragmentos que se colocarán en su medio natural para reintegrarse con el ecosistema. En República Dominicana se superaron las expectativas nacionales al lograr trasplantar 372 fragmentos y 420 metros de coral en 20 mesas  de 1m ²  con la participación de más de 25 buzos voluntarios.

Olaya Dotel, viceministra de Cooperación Internacional del MEPyd, destacó la importancia de la alianza multi-actores para la restauración coralina y dijo que tener la oportunidad de comenzar a resarcir esta deuda que tenemos con nuestra barrera coralina es fundamental, sobre todo en pequeños países insulares como el nuestro que estamos en el trayecto de huracanes.

Dotel agradeció el apoyo del gobierno y el pueblo de Alemania en esta iniciativa y otras que se desarrollan en el país. “Alemania tiene esa vista puesta en el tema ambiental y nos ha estado acompañando a través de GIZ en el aprendizaje y en la adquisición de nuevas prácticas“.

De igual manera, por parte del Ministerio de Economía, Planificación y Desarrollo, se aprovechó la oportunidad para agradecer a las autoridades de la cooperación Alemana, el apoyo que se ha estado brindando a los esfuerzos del Gobierno Dominicano para avanzar el posicionamiento de la nación como oferente de capacidades y prácticas, destacando que Alemania se ha constituido en princial socio para el impulso de iniciativas triangulares.

De su lado, Volker Pellet, embajador de Alemania en República Dominicana, dijo sentirse orgulloso por representar un gobierno, y a la Cooperación alemana, GIZ, que ha compuesto este proyecto triangular tan trascendente para la conservación y restauración de la biodiversidad y a la protección costera en la región.

Las especies seleccionadas para el trasplante regional con el apoyo de los buzos voluntarios son: Acropora cervicornis, Acropora palmata y Pocillopora spp.

En tanto, Yeralffi Arache Ruiz,  Coordinador Regional Este del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, al hablar en representación de José Ramón Reyes, Viceministro de Recursos Costeros y Marinos, manifestó su alegría por este tipo de colaboración a favor de estos ecosistemas y agradeció el apoyo recibido por el gobierno alemán, a través de la GIZ, y además, valoró el extraordinario trabajo que viene realizando FUNDEMAR.

El Comité Técnico del PN Islas de La Bahía, Roatan Marine Park, Fundación Utila Coral / Utila Coral Restoration; BICA ROATÁN; Zona Libre Turística Islas de la Bahía (ZOLITUR); Fundación Cayos Cochinos; y como co-gestores MiAmbiente+, el Instituto de Conservación Forestal, Iniciativa Arrecifes Saludables para Gente Saludable y BICA UTILA son los gestores técnicos en Honduras.

En Bahía Culebra, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Culebra Reef Gardens, el Centro de Investigación en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (CIMAR) de la Universidad de Costa Rica, Península Papagayo, el Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación que forma parte del Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía y Raising Coral Costa Rica son los encargados de implementar el trasplante. Por su parte, en el Golfo Dulce, Raising Coral Costa Rica es la organización que coordina el evento.

Esta gran actividad regional responde a diversos Objetivos de Desarrollo fijados por la ONU para 2030: el ODS 13 Acción por el Clima; el ODS 14 Vida Submarina y el ODS 17 Alianzas para los Objetivos. Y, además, coincide con la “Década de los Océanos” o el Decenio de las Naciones Unidas de las Ciencias Oceánicas para el Desarrollo Sostenible (2021-2030), que procura cambiar la relación de la humanidad con el océano, así como proteger y restaurar los ecosistemas y la biodiversidad.
