Caplan es autor del libro «El caso en contra la educación: por qué el sistema educativo es una pérdida de tiempo y dinero« (The Case against Education: Why the Education System Is a Waste of Time and Money) que fue publicado este año.
Allí sostiene que el sistema de educación superior en Estados Unidos es injusto, que no solo perjudica el desarrollo de los estudiantes, sino el de la sociedad en general.

Lo único que te da es certificaciones, que se pegan en tu cabeza como si fuesen etiquetas, y parece que si una persona tiene mejores calificaciones y más certificaciones tendrá mayores chances de conseguir un buen trabajo.
Pero si todos obtienen esas etiquetas, los empleadores empiezan a seleccionar a las personas de acuerdo a cuántos títulos universitarios tienen o debes tener para ser valioso y ser entrevistado.

También estudios sociales, matemática, incluso ciencia, ya que hay muy pocos puestos de trabajo científicos disponibles. Aparte de saber leer, escribir y aritmética, no hay mucho más que se aplique al mundo real.
Pienso que está mal asumir que las escuelas están enseñando habilidades útiles, que algunas pueden ser que lo hagan, pero en definitiva lo que hacen es proveer de certificaciones o personas con más certificaciones que son más valiosas para conseguir un trabajo.

Empiezo diciéndoles: ¿Creen que tendrán un trabajo en el que usarán algo de lo que les estoy enseñando hoy? Si se convierten en profesores de Economía, puede que lo usen. Pero de otro modo, no. Pero si pierden la clase, u obtienen malas calificaciones, a los empleadores les importará. También les hablo de todo lo que invirtieron de dinero para terminar la universidad.
¿Recomendaría a un joven de 18 años que no vaya a la universidad?
No. Todo depende de cuán bueno fue el estudiante en la secundaria. Si fue bueno y no continúa en la universidad, estará perdiendo muchas oportunidades para tener mejores puestos de trabajo. En el sistema en el que vivimos, los empleadores deciden cuándo eres valioso mirando tus títulos universitarios.
Así que si decides por voluntad propia no tener esas credenciales, es muy probable que pierdas la oportunidad de hacer muchos de los trabajos que hay en el mercado. El sistema no es justo y no es un sistema bueno socialmente, pero tampoco quiere decir que si no te sumas a él, no vas a tener una buena vida.

Un mejor sistema sería que los jóvenes terminen la universidad antes y se conviertan en adultos independientes en una edad más temprana aprendiendo un trabajo de una forma real, haciéndolo. En definitiva inviertes 17 años de tu vida para obtener un título universitario y luego no sabes mucho qué hacer con él.
Después un empleador te contrata y te entrena para hacer el trabajo. Eso puede suceder antes y sería más justo, porque se juzga a las personas por lo que realmente hacen y no por un montón de años de educación.
Por otro lado, pese a que la experiencia laboral importa, muchos no pueden acceder a un determinado puesto de trabajo porque no tienes un título universitario. Si eres muy talentoso y no fuiste a la universidad, tal vez necesites unos 10 o 20 años para alcanzar lo mismo que alguien que lo logró con un título universitario. No es imposible, pero se necesitan trabajar muchos años para alcanzar reconocimiento.
