El polo norte magnético de la Tierra está moviendo hacia Siberia

CNN) — El polo norte magnético ha estado derivándose tan rápido que podría ser un problema para los mapas de los teléfonos inteligentes y los sistemas de navegación.

El polo ha sido amigo de los navegantes durante milenios, señalando con las agujas de la brújula en prácticamente todos los puntos del planeta. Y a diferencia del polo norte geográfico fijo, el polo norte magnético ha migrado poco a poco con el tiempo, moviéndose a través del Ártico canadiense hacia Rusia desde 1831.

Pero su rápido ritmo hacia Siberia en los últimos años a una velocidad de alrededor de 54 kilómetros por año ha obligado a los científicos a actualizar el Modelo Magnético Mundial –utilizado por los sistemas de navegación civil, la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte y los militares estadounidenses y británicos– un año antes de lo previsto.

“Debido a variaciones no planificadas en la región ártica, los científicos han lanzado un nuevo modelo para representar el cambio del campo magnético entre 2015 y ahora”, informó el Centro Nacional de Información Ambiental y Ambiental de la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica Luna.

El modelo, encargado por las agencias militares británicas y estadounidenses, se actualiza típicamente cada cinco años, el más reciente es en 2015. Pero la agencia explicó que la “actualización fuera de ciclo […] garantizará una navegación segura para aplicaciones militares, aerolíneas comerciales, operaciones de búsqueda y rescate, y otras operaciones alrededor del Polo Norte”.

Y aunque el usuario principal del modelo es el ejército, ha encontrado su camino en Google y en los sistemas de mapas civiles de Apple. La diferencia será menor para fines civiles, sin embargo, y los cambios se limitan en gran medida a latitudes superiores a los 55 grados. “Para la mayoría de los usuarios por debajo de 55 grados norte, no hay diferencia real”, dijo a CNN Ciaran Beggan, geofísico del Servicio Geológico Británico, que crea el mapa con la Administración Nacional de la Atmósfera Oceánica (NOAA).

Los científicos notaron por primera vez el cambio en 2018 gracias a una “gran cantidad de datos satelitales” que mostraban que el polo había ido más allá del área pronosticada del modelo, dijo Beggan.

La deriva es causada por procesos en las profundidades del planeta, dijo. El campo magnético de la Tierra se crea en su núcleo externo líquido, que está hecho de hierro líquido y níquel. “A medida que fluye, crea una corriente electrónica y esa corriente forma un campo magnético, que se desplaza con el núcleo caliente que gotea”, dijo.

Hubo algunas teorías sobre por qué el movimiento del polo aumentó en los últimos años: de alrededor de 9,6 kilómetros por año entre 1900 y 1980 antes de acelerarse a alrededor de 38 a 49 kilómetros por año en las últimas dos décadas.
